Novel Guide: The Slave Dancer
Story Synopsis
Thirteen year old Jessie is kidnapped from his home in New Orleans and taken to an illegal slave ship. He is compelled to go with the crew to Africa to collect slaves. He plays a fife for the slaves so that they can get exercise during the return trip. Jessie and a slave his own age become friends on the voyage. During a severe storm, the boat sinks. Jessie and his friend escape to Mississippi. Later, runaway slaves help them escape to Massachusetts via the Underground Railroad.
